In the beginning there were Tea & Herbs

2,000-5,000 years ago…

One day 5,000 years ago the Chinese emperor Shennong ordered one of his servants to boil him water for drinking.  As the story goes, a leaf from a nearby tea bush fell into the boiling water inadvertently, and was unknowingly served to the emperor.  Upon drinking the decoction, the emperor was immediately struck by the invigorating and refreshing quality of the brew, and ordered his servant to return to the spot were the water was boiled.  The source of the leaves was quickly discovered and thus tea came into being.

Many of the earliest written records of tea mention the drinking of tea for medicinal purposes, “Tea boosts the spirit, combats fatigue, stimulates the body, promotes weight loss, and brightens the vision”. (Shennong Ben Cao Jing)

Besides being credited for the discovery of tea, Shennong is also considered the father of Chinese herbal medicine.  The Shennong Ben Cao Jing (Divine Farmer’s Materia Medica), compiled around the first century BC, is the first written record of medicinal plants in China. Over 360 plant and mineral substances, many of which are still in use today, are described by their flavor characteristics and therapeutic properties.

Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world, 2nd only to water.  What’s more, tea is herbal medicine.  For those who enjoy drinking tea but are unacquainted with Chinese herbal medicine, tea is the “gateway herb”!
